One of the main components for enter_universim is the cards. Since I worked hard on the artwork, I want to make sure the cards are printed to as high a degree as I can. This does mean spending money (which I really don’t have), but I think it’ll be worth it. The card sizes are geared towards a standard poker card size, which is 2100x1500, or 8.9cm x 6.4cm.
I opted for PrinterStudio.co.uk as it was the cheapest site I could find.
The template that PrinterStudio offer lays out the dimensions for the card, and lays out the ‘safe area’, which is the area that will be completely unaffected by variations in the print and cutting, the ‘cut area’, which is the line where the card is cut, and the ‘bleed line’, which is the area where the design could extend out to during the cutting process.
As you can see in the second picture, the design only extends far enough to just cover the bleed edge. To avoid any issues with the design being cut off when cut, I extended the design out past the bleed edge so that, when the card is cut, it will always cut within the design.
I do have the option to get a design printed on the box holding the cards, but unfortunately since the cards are already setting me back £100 for 5 decks, adding to that cost is just not possible.
The cards came out good in the end, the finish looks good and they feel good in the hand. The only issue however, is that I did not extend the designs out far enough on some of the cards. As you can see for The Hero’s Lifeline card, there is a black border around the edge where the design doesn’t extend out far enough. If I were to do it again, I’d obviously be a bit more attentive to make sure that the designs extend far enough.
